The ever popular Super Mario video game was created in 1985 by Nintendo. Nintendo is a multinational corporation based in Japan and was initially founded in 1889 producing handmade Hanafuda cards. Hanafuda literally means “flower cards” and were used to play a number of games. They developed several small businesses over the years and eventually in 1874 entered the electronic era developing video games. The Mario Bros game was developed in 1983 and in 1985 Super Mario Bros was released. As the title suggests, Mario is the main character who seeks to rescue Princess Peach of the Mushroom Kingdom, surviving the main antagonist, Bowser’s forces.  If a player gains a red and yellow mushroom then Mario increases in size so that he can take on extra hits from his enemies and obstacles. Players have a certain number of lives and can gain additional by picking up green and orange ‘1-up’ mushrooms. These are lost if Mario takes too much damage, falls into a pit or runs out of time. The game is finished when all lives are lost. Luigi, Mario’s younger brother is playable by the second player in the game’s multi-player mode and has the same plot role as Mario.

As mentioned earlier, Nintendo’s Super Mario’s popularity has been taken over by the Nintendo Wii Sports. Wii is a home video console released by Nintendo and is their fifth home console, the successor to the GameCube. In December 2009 Wii broke the record for the best-selling console in a single month in the United States.Wii Sports offers five different sports experiences using the Wii remote to provide a realistic feel. The sports games include tennis, baseball, bowling, golf and boxing, all accessed from the main menu. When you play the games it feels so realistic, for example when you play tennis you control the racked by swinging the Wii remote.

Not only has Nintendo developed the Wii Sports, but there is also a Wii Fit, a great way to stay healthy from the comfort of your home. Wii Fit has a balance board with software that allows it to, amongst its many uses, to calculate your body mass index (BMI) when you give your height. There are about 50 different activities including yoga postures, strength training, aerobics and balance games. It has become such a popular way to keep feet that some health clubs around the world have adopted it as well as being used for physiotherapy rehabilitation. Even some nursing homes are using the Wii Fit to help their elderly residents to do some gentle exercise as well as helping them with their balance and flexibility.

Nintendo have come a long way since creating playing cards, not only developing the ever popular Super Mario game, but literally taking over the fitness market.
